I promise you

I promised you to write 7 articles on the room101pm.blogspot.com before the New Year.

Every day I searched in my diary for some interesting things I had written before. Then I typed it two times on the computer. The first time I typed the story in the Microsoft Word. That checks spelling and grammar. Then I printed it to keep. The second time I typed it on the blog because I didn’t know how to cut and paste it from Microsoft Word to room101pm.blogspot.com. So, that was too much work. I am tired. My eyes hurt. Now I need lie down on the couch to relax, to watch TV, to read books, to dream and to rest.. I am sorry. That’s it for me!

After I laid down on the couch, my dog slept on my chest close to my head. Now that I more relaxed, I am writing this with my pencil. I hope you will correct it. I will be happy if you do. If you don’t, I will cry. Ha…ha… Later, maybe, I will write again. Now I am putting away my pencil and paper. I need to relax for the rest of the holidays.

Teacher, Happy New Year and best wishes for happiness now and in the New Year!

Driving License

Today I was very happy. I got first license in the USA---driving license. I thought this is god help me. So, I was lucky woman. Now I must go to college to learn English. It can help me to get nursing license.
Afternoon 1:25pm, druive's teacher picked me up to DMV. I asked him many questions. He said:" you have too many questions when you drive car. You must relaxed." So he hope me deep breath and don't be nervous. I remember it.
when we arrived at DMV, no body waited for. It was lunch time. later a Chinese examiner gave me to test. He was good man. He spoook slowly and cleanly. He asked me:" Do you have any questions?' I said:" First time, maybe I don't understand what dose he says" He friendly said:" if you don't understand, you can ask me. I repeat say again. But we must to keep safe." He still slow and cleanly gave me direction in all course of test. So I hadn't nervous, and rerelax whole test. When I finished the test, the examiner took to me: you are past! My drive's teacher and me were excited. When the examiner gave me temporary license I smiled at him friendly, and swayed my hand said: thank you, bye.
When the drive's teacher picked me up to go back home he took to me many about the USA good things for people. I knew he ever help many Chinese people. He was friendly and honest Chinese man. Thank teacher.

Acupuncture in Our Country

When I have been nurse in China. I saw some patients to use acupuncture to remedy their arthritis. Many patients used acupuncture in summer. It is very common. That can remedy their trouble ailments of pain. So each summer was busy season in acupuncture department.
Before I came to the USA I saw many overweight people need to lose their weights to try acupuncture. the acupuncturist used more needles to insert into different acupuncture points on people's abdomen, arms and legs. that stays in place for 30 minutes. three time a week. A course of treatment for one month, at same time, the ear's needles stay in place for a course of treatment. People usully pinch ear's needles by their selves. the result is good. So many people try to do.

My childhood

When I was child I visited my grandmother. She taught me evertthing and took care of me.
When I was 7 years old I got nephritis. My grandmother took me to see a Chinese doctor and a western doctor. The Chinese doctor gave me Chinese medicinal herbs. My grandmother mixed medicinal herbs with fish. It tasted very bad. Then she put some sugar in it. Then she fed me when I played. Every day I ate medicinal more than food for long time. Because I was ailing child. So she took care of me very hard.
Sometimes I think if my grandmother hadn't taken care of me when I was a child. I wouldn" have a healthy life now So I always remember her. Thank you my grandmother---from my heard.

What Do You Like in the USA?

My name is Irene. I come from China. My teacher asked us, "What do you like in the USA?"

Each student had a different answer. I thought for a long time. Now I really like teacher Richard and my classmates. My teacher is interesting. My classmates are not boring. We talk with each other.

At first, when I came to this class, I was apprehensive and sometimes I felt tired. I wanted to go home. Now, I don't want to go home because this class makes me happy. It is important to me. So, because of this course I like the USA.

Next month I shall go to Laney College. I hope I will keep this good feeling.

Thanks, teacher. Thanks, classmates. I will miss you very much.

Room101

In the afternoon, you can see, hear and share a lot of fun and funny in the room101! Don't believe it? Trust me! My tactful and humorous teacher -Richard Blum always say that.

I - Shanchang is from coast city South of China. I thought that I am a honest woman. I tell all of my opinions of English to my classmates Since I want to learn more English. But sometimes teacher would like to say: "Shanchang, Give me your opinion. You usually don't agree with anyone."Right now you agree with me. Teacher?

Alice, a really beautiful Italian young girl. She is a vegetarian and optimist. She likes dancing and likes to arrange activities for us. She is interested to do active things that she is like our good model in real life - to be or not to be. We avoid to say that I kill a chicken or I eat a big of steak in front of her. If you said like that, she would say:"Oh! My God! You?!" Then She stare at you and doesn't believe this. And you would feel guilty: "Oh! Alice, I am so sorry about that!"

Alex, a really handsome mexican young bachelor. He have taken classes in drawing and performance of his country. He likes to play guitar also. Sometimes he would like to show his skills of guitar in classroom if he wanted and felt excited. however, Alex and I usually have argument. "What are you doing? Shanchang?" He say to me. " I check my dictionary, I don't understand this word." "Don't do that! I would report to teacher. You don't pay attention to him." That sound is like kids. "Oh! Man! Please kill me!" Then next day, I say:"don't do that. Man!" "I don't care! I don't care!" "Oh! Kill me! Please!"

Anyway, I am going to tell you all of them in room101. But I don't have time right away. So, sorry! "Don't be sorry, be careful!" "Who is it?" Next time I will tell you!

Getting Help in School ... A ThankYou Letter

Today was a bad day, also, it was a good day. When class finished I wanted to go home but I couldn't open my car door. I tried again but it still wouldn't work. First, I hoped that teacher Richard could help me, so I went back to my classroom. When I talked to him about my problem, he immediately went out with me. He check out my car and said that I had forgotten to turn of the lights of my car so the battery wouldn't work.

Oh, my god! Today it had been raining and I had turned on the lights but I had forgotten to turn them off. So, I got in big trouble. I was worried. My battery needed a jump. It needed help to start. Richard looked at me and said, "Don't worry." He went back to the school's office and asked some teachers if they had jumper cables. They said that Burr Guthrie had some, but we couldn't find him. then one teacher said she had some cables and the school guard, Benjamin Ween went out to her car to look for her cables, but he didn't find them.

When Richard was helping to call my husband, Burr Guthrie came in and heard about my problem. Soon he and the guard, Benjamin Weems, helped me to jump the battery. Immediately my car started. I could go home. thanks, teacher Richard and Burr Guthrie. Thanks, guard Benjamin Weems. Thanks, school. I got help in the school. I am a lucky person!

A Letter

Dear Mr.Michal:

I am writing this letter to tell you about a problem I have with your airline. My husband and I came back home on Flight cx 872 on May 12, As I write this, I am still missing one large piece of luggage.

When we arrived in the airport of San Francisco, we wanted to take our luggage. But we couldn't find it. Then we asked about our luggage. They told me that it might be on other airline.

The luggage contains my husband's and my clothes, hats. Right now we don't have clothes to dress. Beacuse we are new immigrants. We don't have enough money to buy enough clothes. You must agree that it has been a rather costly mistake. I would appreciate it if you would look into this matter as soon as possible. I hope that you can resolve this matter.

sincerely yours.

Shan

My Diary <2> - to my best freind

Monday 5:00pm

It was nice to get your photos, I miss you very much. I miss talking to you. But I really studied hard in English.

Two months ago, I got a job. I was a food server. I worked very hard. I had to clean up tables, mopped the floor, ordered food for customers and counted money. In my "free" time, I had to prepare a lot of boxes. So, this job was different and difficult for me. I was naive to think that I could earn more money, but the boss wasn't very nice. She gave me a low salary. Then I decided to quit the job.

Right now I go to school Monday through Friday. Are you still busy with teaching? please write to me soon and tell me about your life as a teacher.

My Diary <1>

Friday 7:00Pm

I came to the United States that It was a very bad decision. I am not younger. I have to learn the second language; I have to adjust to life in a new culture; I have to work very hard. These factors are not easy in culture shock. Everything is unfamiliar. So, I produce a feeling of disorientation.

I feel terrible here. I am worried about my studying, my job, my life. I feel lonely when I come home from school.

But Oakland's weather is pleasant. Flowers are everywhere. These factors look similar my hometown. Other thing is better that it is : I can go to college by free, the government pay me. I am lucky I don't need to pay anything. SO, sometimes I feel like staying here. I could buy a car late. Beause a car is cheaper than China. I decided to solve the problem from the unfamiliar environment. I can't escape!

I'm back

This was a guy how went to Washington, but today.......... he back.

LAS VEGAS

Hi guys! It's still me...sorry if I bother you! I was looking for some flights to Las Vegas and I found some good deal. Let's go!!!! The best think for me would be to go there on the first week of January before the beginning of the school. We can go there only for two or three days. I'm not so interested in gambling but I really want to visit that place.
Who wants to come? I swear: I'll be a pain in your a...neck until you say "Yes!"

Have you ever tried to go to the bathroom in the Oakland Public Library?

Have you ever tried to go to the bathroom in the Oakland Public Library?
If yes, it would be an experience that you won’t forget in your whole life!
Yesterday, I went to the library to print a discount that allows two persons to get into a salsa club at the price of one ticket. (Before I forget, I think that would be a very good idea to buy a printer for the students, so students could print. I don’t mean that we should have free prints, but you could sell print cards or you could establish a price for each copy…This is not a complaint letter, but only a suggestion!)
Anyway, while I was there I had to go to the bathroom…urgently!
When I reached the door it was locked and there was a sign that said to ask at the information desk for the key.
So I run to the desk and I asked the librarian for the key. At this point he showed me this very big and strange object that didn’t look like a key at all. It was like a sculpture of abstract art or a torture instrument. The object was a little black plastic thing tied with a big iron ring, tied to a heavy iron and big thing and on that thing there was a paper with the instruction to use the key. The instructions were incomprehensible for me, not because it was a difficult English to understand, but because I couldn’t believe that we could open a door waving something over a something else…
I mean, in all my life I have always opened and locked doors with a key, but, I was sure, I had never done something like that to open a door before. And the most important thing was that I couldn’t believe that I had to carry with me the whole big and heavy strange object. So I tried to dismantle the most little part from the other stuff, under the incredulous sight of the librarian. But the whole thing was tightly tied together! I surrendered and I asked the librarian if I had to bring the whole stuff with me. I think he couldn’t believe that I didn’t understand so he only repeated me for three times that I had to read the instructions and that the bathroom was upstairs.
I was really in a hurry so I decided to bring the object and that I would try to use it in some way when I would be in front of the door (maybe also by hitting the handle of the door with the iron part…It was an emergency!).
Finally, when I reached the door, I passed by chance the plastic part near the electronic device that opens the door. The door opens automatically and I could enter. It was like an enchanted door!
Very often it happens to me that I feel stupid in the US and it’s not only because I can’t understand the language, but because I find myself in strange and unbelievable situations!
I wanted to share with you this story so, thanks to my experience, everybody could go easily to the bathroom next Tuesday...

Thank you!

I don’t know if this post will count in the 10 posts to get a certificate, anyway I would like to tank you, teacher, for the chance that you gave me last Thursday…
I think that the thing that I like the most in the US is not a particular place, but is the warmth that I have found in my class, thanks to you and to my class mates.
I really enjoy my every day three hours of school. I will be here only for two more months and I am eager to learn and to share my “Americans days” with my class mates. You are the most important persons that I met here, that’s why it was so important to me to introduce you to my mom. I always talk about how I feel good in my class and I want to tank you because you gave me the opportunity to make this virtual meeting with my mom. She was very happy to see me and you all. She told me that I look happy and that she likes my class too. She wanted to know your names so she could associate the stories that I tell her with your faces (Don’t worry, only good stories). After that I felt very happy and she felt like that too.
It was amazing! I just wanted to tell you and to thank you, because I don’t like to take the good things of my life like expected thinks.
I think the persons in this class are simply wonderful. I feel very happy and lucky for meeting you in my life!

Am I A Thief?

Two week ago, my husband and I went to our aunt's house to join Thanksgiving party. When we arrived there,I saw a lot of fruit trees in her backyard. It is really like a small orchard. I climbed up a tree and sat on the limb. Orange, green were full of my eyes. This situation made me to remember other scene: when I was 11 years old.

In 1983, my parents were teachers. So they didn't have enough money to give an allowance to my brothers and me. We didn't have snacks, candies or fruit. A few of chance, my cousins stole fruit from a farmer's orchard when their parents didn't know it. They divided the fruit up little bit for me, since they wanted to copy my homework.

One day, my cousins told me, They had seen a lot of oranges in a farm when they cross there. They convinced me to steal fruit with them. I thought that I was longing to eat fruit at this time. So, we sneaked into an orchard outside my city. We climbed up a tree under avoiding a farmer. I felt scared and guilty. my legs were shivered. But when I saw a lot of oranges around me, I forgot that feeling. I only wanted to catch all of the oranges. I shared the smelling and catching. Suddenly, I heard a angry voice over there:"what are you doing there?" "Oh, my God! farmer!" A farmer ran fast to us with a long stick and yelling. "Jump down! Jump down! Run away at once!" My cousins shouted in a hurry.

We caught branches and swung down. Immediately, we broke into a run. When we ran to the attic of a home, we were frightened and excited. Fortunately, we held a few of the pieces of fruit in our hands tightly. However, I didn't want to do any more inmost my heart!

The Exploratorium

On Wednesday fifth, Francisco, Rodrigo and I went to San Francisco to visit the Exploratorium, a museum about sciences that is situated in a nice park near the Palace of Fine Arts.
What is great is that almost every museum, in San Francisco, has at least one free entrance day a month, so culture is available for anyone.
We went there on the free entrance day and it was full of children, but it was not too crowded, so we could enjoy it.
There were a lot of experiments to do, that help children to understand many physical phenomenons like the heat, the wind or the magnetism.
The fun thing was that in this place you can experience everything and it makes to learn more interesting.
We were very excited, even more than children, and we wanted to try almost every activity. For this reason we could only see a half part of the whole exhibit.
The more interesting exhibit, in my opinion, was the one about human mind and senses. They show how they can be tricked. There were many optical illusions. One of them was the Alice in Wonderland’s House, where the perspective created by the squares on the floor make you look like a giant in a corner and like a dwarf in the opposite corner of the house.
We had a really amazing time: we created hearth quick by jumping all together, we made water and smoke rings, we talked on the phone with a fish in a tank and we also drank water from a toilet!
I can’t wait to come back there and to finish the whole tour of the museum. Here are some pictures of us. We should have taken more than these, but we were too busy and concentrated in all the activities…

My first Thanksging Day

This year, on November 22, I had my first Thanksgiving Day. Actually we had one in Italy when my American sister was there, but it was not a typical Thanksgiving. First of all, because we were in Italy and second because we didn’t even have a turkey. Instead we had two little chickens that my mom passed off as dwarves turkeys.
Also my Thanksgiving Day in the US wasn’t exactly traditional. I spent the first part of the day in Oakland, helping my family to get ready for the dinner and setting up the restroom in a way that could host a lot of people. The second half of the day, the “eating part”, I was in Stockton with my sister, her brother and her sister in low. My sister and I were late so when we arrived, her brother, Alex, had already cooked almost everything. The only thing that we could do was to do the appetizers. The dinner was very quiet and intimate, without the family dramas that are supposed to happen on the Holiday days.
Alex spoiled us by doing everything we asked him: he coked, he set the table, he cleaned everything after dinner and let us watching all the movies that we wanted.
We watched a movie called “Home for Holidays”, with a very dysfunctional family and many funny and awkward situations.
On Friday, we didn’t go shopping at 4 for the big sales and we preferred to sleep until 11, we spent all day eating leftovers and using the computer.
In the evening we went to a hokey game between Thunder of Stockton and Ace from Alaska.
Alex works for the team so he gave us two cute hats and big foam rubber hands. Between the second and the third time there was a game called “Chuck the puck”. The audience had to throw foam puck into the ring and to try to reach the target at the center of the ring. After that game, my sister and I, with many little children, went into the ring to collect the pucks and clean the ring before the game restarted. I was a little scared and I felt very awkward because we were in front of the audience, sliding and everybody could stare at us, but it was fun!
On Saturday morning we went shopping and I finally bought speakers for my i-pod, so I can listen to the loud music. After the shopping we came back to Oakland and I spent the last two free days at home with my dog…I was very bored and a little sad. It’s weird but I was very happy to come back school!

Alex from Spokane

American yet not

This is a old history but I would like to write about that.

Like three weeks ago I went to San Francisco with Alice because like you know a big ship wrecked in the bay bridge spilling 58,000 gallons of oil.

So, We were trying to be voluntaries to help clean the beaches but we couldn't do it because we are not American citizens. But we are not illegals here, it was frustrating. we took the training in the auditorium at the golden gate park so we could help, but they told us that we should go back home.

However, we had a good time there in SF, we took the BART and before that the MUNI (train), it was nice and we ate in a very good restaurant, was like mediterranean food. Anyways, it was a new experience.

I feel that it is dumb, because they need help but they won't take it. And that wasn't the first time that I was rejected. One time I tried to volunteer at a foster home, asylums, etc. But I was treated the same.

Well, I suppose that I'm not able to help in America. Why??? stupid american rules. That's all.

Alex

hello from Spokane, WA

Hello Class

I could not write before because I am in Spokane, Washington now and it was impossible to find internet, but I want to get a certificate and wrote eight stories on the blog, so I am very close to getting it (right Richard?)

I came to visit my friends here (Seth and Annie) and I am spending a long time here with them. They are Americans and I met them in Mexico. I have not seen them for four years.

Here it is very cold and this was the first time I ever saw snow. I was impressed when I got down from the airplane. The weather is very chancing and it is always cold. Some days it is sunny and another days is raining or snowing. My friends have taken me many places like the woods, downtown, the River etc. This city reminds me my city in Mexico. I really like it. It is a city surrounded by pine trees and mountains. I would like you all to see it.

Maybe soon I will go to the mountains and snowboard. That sounds exciting.

See you guys soon.

How are you doing Richard?

Day of dead in Uruapan...

By
Alberto Ortega Servin

Let me explain this history…

In Uruapan, on November 2, people celebrate the Day of the Dead. Many people go to the cemetery. Florists sell flowers in the street near the cemetery. People put the flowers on the tombs of their dead relatives.

The most popular flower in this celebration is the "cempasuchitl." This flower is the symbol of the Day of the Dead. I don’t know if this flower is popular in other countries, but, in Mexico, it so popular that it is called the “Flor de Muertos.” This flower is yellow. Many people remember their dead relatives with affection.

The festive period begins on the night of October 31, and continues until the Day of All the Saints. People celebrate on November 1, and 2. Many people make altars in the church and school. They put photographs of their relatives on the altars and decorate them with flowers , vegetables and bread.

Many people say that the spirits of their relatives come to the altars to enjoy their favorite foods. Every altar is illuminated with many candles.

This celebration is one of the most colorful in Mexico. People from different parts of Mexico, and from all over the world, come to to see the Day of the Dead Celebrations in Uruapan, Michoacán.

Mashed In The Moshpit!

Hi teacher!
I’m goin to tell you about my first time in a club in San Jose.
As I told you I like dancing ska music and I really miss to go dance, because in my country I used to go to some clubs every weekends.
Some week ago, my American sister asked me if I’d like to go with her and her Mexican boyfriend to a Panteon Rococo concert, a Mexican band from Mexico City that plays ska music. I was very excited and I couldn’t wait to go.
When we arrived in San Jose, after a one hour drive, we had to wait in line outside the club because it was very full of people. So when finally we came in the concert had already begun. The waiting wasn’t so bad, even if it was cold, because I could talk a lot (in both English and Spanish) with my sister’s boyfriend and I enjoyed it since it was the first time that I met him. You know when you have a new boyfriend you always need the approval of your sister…
We tried to go in the middle of the moshpit, but it was very hard and I was really scared because people were very violent. Actually it was the most violent moshpit that I had ever seen in my life! I felt bad, everybody push and pull me form a side to another of the dance floor and nobody cared if I am a woman. So I left the dance floor to enjoy the concert from a safer corner, while my sister and her boyfriend stayed into the moshpit.
I spent the rest of the evening on the side of the room waiting for my friends that came only when the concert was ended. In the meanwhile, many Mexican guys tried to talk with me and it was hard because my Spanish is not fluent and often I couldn’t understand them, even because they were a little drunk and they couldn’t speak very clearly.
After the concert they played salsa music and I tried to dance it with a friend of us, but it’s really difficult for me, so I decided to have a drink, called Adios and to wait for the end of the night.
I was a little sad because all my expectations were disappointed: I couldn’t dance, I didn’t enjoy too much the concert and I didn’t even meet some handsome guy whom dance with. Furthermore I have always thought that I was a "strong ska girl", but this experience taught me that there are many "ska girls" more "ska" than me!

Hello guys

Hiii guys!!!!

I would like to be there to say this, but I am very busy now and I couldn't go to the schoolfor a couple a weeks, because mi brother is going to get married tomorrow and my mother ishere, so, I am like the tourist guide rigth now, and she is going to be here only 3 days, so I am spending all my time with her.

Also the Saturday, I am flying to Washinton State because I am going to visit a friend, butI bought my airplane ticket before the classes finished to come back to see all of you, and sayMerry Christmas at least, and give you a small... small........ SMALL gift from Mexico.

Richard I wrote a couple a histories for the Blog, I will try to write them on the Internet as soonas possible. Class mates, take care of Richard please because at his age, sometimes he loses his mind and it is also harder to walk ... jajajaja (just joking)

See you in a couple a weeks guys.

Singing

Here are some pictures of your classmates singing after the Thanksgiving Party.

Tomorrow, I'll try and post the party pictures and pictures of the Saturday in San Francisco.

I would have posted them today but I made a small mistake and didn't copy the right folder.

Hope I get it right tomorrow.

Until then,

It is process for carve your Jack-O-Lantern in Halloween

By
Alberto Ortega Servin

In Halloween this is process for that you make your Jack-O-Lantern. First step is. You hold a pumpkin with your hand and in the other hand you hold a knife and with it carve your pumpkin. You thought about making a face in the pumpkin. You cut the top part of the pumpkin also you take off the top of the pumpkin with your hand and you can cut inside of the pumpkin other step is when you remove the seeds and strings from inside the pumpkin until inside pumpkin is very clean of the seed and strings. Next step you made the eyes on the pumpkin. Then it is looking very funny other step is. When you are prepare for carve it and you carve a mouth and nose on the pumpkin after you lit a candle with a match. When your candle is lit and you can see candle when it is burning and it melts also you are dripping wax inside the pumpkin and you put the candle inside of the pumpkin. Next step is you replace at top of the pumpkin.
When you replace of the top of the pumpkin and you set the pumpkin in the window. When pass about the one week or more time and you get off of the pumpkin of the window or also this action is decision from everybody and you clean the scraps with a broom and dustpan.
I think so that this process is once of the more popular in the United States for that you could made your Jack-O-Lantern in Halloween. But for that you could make this process also you sow your owner pumpkin plant or you are going to buy a pumpkin in the store and in the store is more near from your house.

Thanksgiving Day Party

What do you think about to have a football game at Lake Merrit after the Thanksgiving Day party, next Tuesday? I don't know how to play it but I would like to learn! And if we are tired we could only lie in the sun and maybe sing some songs.

P.S. Does anyone have a football ball?

In My Opinion...

By
Alberto Ortega Servin
In my opinion the Mexican people only think about of their situation economic and illegal, I don’t know if this situation to passing in people other countries. Now everyone has been in your job in this country although of that we need green card, also we have come of the places very poor as our life’s to change in this country but we couldn’t forget that the Mexican politics. They are looking everyone because we are in the United States, they will need our support also per the influence in our families in Mexico because many Mexican people are experiment a new life now.
The immigrants have been coming in other country. I don’t know but the Mexican politics are coming every day to the United States with the same false promise already that they have only caused illusions in the Mexican immigrant. We could understand that the politics only they have needed our support they have been known that our lives are changing now because we have new job and more money.
I don’t know if this situation repeats in other country because in the Mexican immigrants this situation repeats every day. We have to working for our families because we couldn’t case a politician already that they have came for decades with same promise but they set up in the government so they forget of the immigrant. When they have took the position in the government they will become in rich. They forget of the immigrant. Here only we need to work for our families. We could forget the politic only they seek for influence in your families in Mexico also now we live to different in this country. Why? Because we have enough money for pay all the services and support our families.
My recommendation is that the people have been coming of other country that all people work for your dream already we can to work for our dream because we must work for our dreams if we are working every day here our dreams to realize. We can’t to forget of the politics they always say to lie before in my country happened now I don’t know.

Another Nutrition Study

Here is a new study.

According to this study, If you are carrying a few extra pounds, you may live longer!

Isn't it strange how each report on nutrition and health seems to tell a different story?

What is considered oveweight?

To see if you are considered overweight, you must check your body mass index (BMI). If your BMI is over 25, you are considered overweight.

Childhood

My husband was born in a small town in Vietnam. When he was 10 years old, he had to help his mother to trade.

Every day, he had to get up early under his mother's loud yell. Before the sun raised, they must cross through the small town and arrived farmer's market between Vietnam and China.

There, they spent some money to buy various merchandise. My husband's responsibility was looking at articles and waited for his mother to trade with farmers. When they finished shopping, they shipped these merchandise to their town in hurry.

In town, my husband's mother owned one booth. She used it to wholesale or sale merchandise feeding her children. She worked as a businesswoman very hard. But my husband didn't understand, because he wanted to go outside to play with his friends. So, sometimes, he felt angry and hated his mother.

One day, his mother bought a group of chickens and called him to feed them with leftover crop and rice. My husband was very unhappy. While his mother didn't pay attention at him, he caught a chicken and opened its beak. At once, he put a bowl of crop into stomach of chicken. The chicken couldn't breathe air and resisted him. Swings hit the floor to make loud noise. My husband's mother stared at him and asked:" what are you doing?" He was very scared. He broke into a run before his mother caught at him.

That day, my husband couldn't eat dinner. Because unfortunately, that chicken died!

Who I Am

Before deciding to come here, I, like each of my classmates, left important people and important things behind. It was a hard decision. I left my job, my friends, my family. I left important projects for the people I lived with to complete.

Since I was young, I’ve been always interested in the arts. Art is what I want to do, and it is what I do. I like painting, playing music, and reading, but what I really enjoy is acting. Also I played volleyball since I was child. It is my favorite sport.

I was 15 when I started to take acting classes. First, it was a hobby. I was very young and wanted to experience new things. Of course, I was a very bad actor.

After a couple of years, that hobby became a part of my life. I like the adrenaline before and during performances. It is a unique sensation, because it is something alive. It is something that only can exist in that place and at that moment. Each performance is unique. It is exciting to see and to feel people’s reactions when we improvise.

When I was 18 I left volleyball because I started studying architecture at the University. I didn’t have enough time. Instead, I started to work for the state government in artistic festivals and cultural events. When I was 21 I got to be director of a theatre. It was the newest theater in my city. It is a big theater with new theatrical equipment. I learned a lot about how a theater works, and I really enjoyed what I was doing.

I had big responsibilities there, because so many people worked there. I had to manage the finances because the theater was self-sustaining and many artistic activities were presented there every week like: performances, music concerts, dance presentations, conferences, etc. At the same time, I was studying, and I was acting in two different performance-groups, so, I was exhausted, But I really enjoyed everything that I was doing.

Three years ago, a number of players from different groups, began to work together to create in a new performance concept. We trained in different techniques like: stilts, juggling, acrobatics, clowning and everything needed to make spectaculars street performance.

Now, my performance group is a little upset with me because I am here. but they are still working in Mexico.

First TV in my small Town

First TV in My Small Town
by
Alberto Ortega Servin

Otilia’s mother told me about the first TV in our small town. She said that Rafael Garcia brought the first TV from Guadalajara. It was a black and white TV. In a short time he became the most popular man in my small town because many people heard about his television.

People were very interested in watching TV because they had never watched TV before. Only people who had been to the United States had seen one.

The most important thing is that people in my town hadn’t watched a TV program, so, at this time, many people paid about 20 centavos to watch TV. In the house of Rafael Garcia, young and old people went to watch TV. Not all people had enough money to pay to watch TV.

I remember that my mother said that at this time the most popular programs were the movies of Pedro Infante. “Chavo del 8”, “El Chapulín Colorado” and the soap operas.

When there was a event special on television, Rafael Garcia announced it with a loudspeaker

What kind of special event you might ask? For example, boxing matches were popular event in the lives of these people as well as special events like baseball. People already listened to baseball on the radio so it was very popular.

At this time only one TV network existed in Mexico. It was called Televisa. Now there are at least two TV networks. Televisa and TV Azteca transmit programs the across Mexico and around the world.

People could only watch two stations: channel 2 and channel 5. On channel 2 they played soap operas and Mexican movies. Channel 5 played programs it bought from the TV networks in the United States of America.

My mother told me that for a long time many people didn't own TVs because the people didn’t have enough money to buy them.

Also,I remember that when I was child only four or five people owned televisions. My brother I went to watch TV at our uncle, Rafael Ortega's, house. We also watched TV at uncle Fidel Baez’s house. My father and mother always told us not to watch TV because, they said, that TV was very dangerous for our eyes. I don’t know if that was true, but I frequently watched TV in the house of my uncle, Rafael Ortega. Also my grandfather often told us not to watch TV because, he said, we should feed the cattle or do some other worthwhile activities. We needed to do homework but the TV was a distraction and sometimes we didn’t do our homework.

Now, in my small town, everyone has a TV. Times have changed and now most people have enough money to buy TVs.

Cam Huong Restaurant
Ms. Thuv
755 International Boulevard
Oakland, CA

Dear Ms. Thuv:

"Thanks, lady!" Your restaurant is a clean place. The food in your restaurant is very delicious. The Cam Huong Restaurant is very near our school and the food servers are very nice. However, it might be healthier for people if the cooks didn't use so much mono sodium glutamate.

Mono sodium glutamate is made from chemicals. It can effect blood pressure and cause heart disease. Please use fresh, organic food and improve the skills of the cooks so instead of using MSG. Palatable and healthy food will get more customers for you. You will earn a lot of money.

If don't put so much MSG in the food, your customers won’t need to go to the hospital so often.

Sincerely,

Manager of Lucky Supermarket
Mr. Kevin Twyford
2020 29th Avenue
Oakland, CA

Dear Mr. Twyford,

I would like to tell you that your supermarket has the best prices in town an the store is always clean, but I think it would be even better if you offered the best quality meat. I mean, please offer poultry, beef, lamb and pork with less fat.

Too much fat can cause many health problems. Heart disease, high cholesterol and overweight are caused by eating too much fat. Quality meat may be more expensive, but if it reduces health problems, it is worth the extra money. I would rather spend more money in your store than in the doctor’s office.

I feel that healthy food is important and you can help by selling high quality low fat meat and poultry.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Angelica Briddell

Mr. Johnson

Dear Mr. Johnson:

I am a student of the Neighborhood Centers Adult School. My name is Shumei Xu.

I have been to your supermarket many times. Your market is a great market. I can buy any thing that I want there. Your market has complete equipment and good service. Everybody is very nice. It would be even better if you sold plenty of fresh vegetables.

I want to talk about something important to you. I found your market doesn’t usually have fresh vegetables to offer to its customers.

If a customer comes to your market, and then they look at your vegetable section, but each kind of vegetable is not fresh, I think they won’t buy them. It is bad for your business.

Fresh vegetables are good and important for everyone’s health. They are also important for the health of your business.

I hope you will sell fresher vegetables as soon as possible.

Thank you,

Manager of Parkway Theater

Oakland, CA

Dear Mr. Jones,

I am a movie addict and your Theater is my favorite theater in Oakland. I really enjoy its funny and friendly atmosphere, its comfort and, of course, its very cheap prices. I think that eating some good tasting food while watching a movie it’s a great idea and a delight for your mouth and your eyes.

However your customers will enjoy even more your Theater if you start selling lean and organic food. The importance of nutrition in our society is thriving more and more and many people become to be very beware about a healthy lifestyle.

If you would add in your menu some lean and organic food customers that take care of the diet, could eat during the movie without the fear of getting fat.
Furthermore, you will offer to your customers a wide range of choices increasing the popularity of your theater and your profit and it won’t cost you too much.

I think that it would be a little but important change, for both you and your customers, that follows the healthy trend spreading in our country.

Tango at Buenos Aires

Hi class.

This is my first time writting in the blog, and for this first time I want to tell you about my travel to Buenos Aires Argentina. As you know I like to dance, mostly salsa, but I like every dance which take two persons.

The last year I went to South America on vacation, actually my original plan was to travel to Chile for a week and to visit Argentina and Brasil in my way back. I spend the whole week in Chile just as my plan was, but as soon as I arrived to Buenos Aires, capital of tango, I couldn't leave.

I decided that I should stay for a week before leaving so I can take some tango classes, "I can't leave Buenos Aires without dancing tango" I thought. So I took an hotel room in center Buenos Aires and started looking for places and dance studios to take classes, and I went out to practice what I just learnt every single night. I met people, friendly young and old people who use to dance tango almost every night. I started to make friends.

I knew I should leave soon, but I fell in love with tango and I still didn't want to leave so I stayed. I lived in Buenos Aires for over 6 months.

The Final Friday

(Farce in one act)

It was 7:10 in the morning, I still remember the hour just like if it was yesterday. I was in my bed when I opened my eyes. At first sigh everything looked normal, as a regular day, but it was not. I hear something outside, a mysterious noise that was surrounding the house, that noise was in all the places, also in the roof. I did not know what was going on, but I had the most terribly sensation. I woke up in my bed, and I approached to the window very slowly. I was not sure, but took strength from my insides, and then I took a deep breath , opened the window and there it was, . The water falling from the sky, a soft breeze soaking everything it touched, it was exactly as the bible describes as The Apocalypses.

I did not know what to do, I could not moved for a few seconds, I was paralyzed and scarred watching that terrible scene. Everything I knew was that I should not go out to the street, much less to school at this situation, It was very shocking to me. I was to choice between my life and my education. And I think I choose the most wiser answer, I went back to sleep.

After I went back to sleep, I dreamed for a couple hours, I dream ed that I was walking in the street when suddenly, the sky was turn dark and start to rain, I could not hide under a tree, much less into a house, because suddenly everything disappear. The city begun to transform in a desert where there was not where to hide from the water, everything was sand, and the water managed to reach me, and every second that the water got wetting me, made me fell more and more weak.

When I woke up from the nightmare. It was 11:00 at noon. And I stilled remember what I was dreaming seconds before. I still scared, but everything looked better, the noise was to disappear, and then a smile drawing on my face. I felt comfort.

I woke up, for the second time of the day, and I started to get ready to go at my afternoon class. I toke a shower, I dress up, I made some breakfast, and got ready all my stuff to leave, I climbed down the stairs and when I opened the door, you would not to believe my what I saw. The rain was still there.

I could not believe that, and that my bicycle was wet. I just stand up in the door watching again that terrible scene, but this time the breeze was more stronger than the first. And without knowing, Perla (my dog), she did not know what was going on, and started to run outside at the street. When I saw her, she was in the sidewalk down the street, I could not believe what that was happening, because she was in danger, and afraid she begun to run more and more in the other direction, I did not what to do, I pulled some strenght and went to her rescue, but when I reached her she was all moody over her feet, ad this is what happened, now Perla is not the same that before, she had changed and I could help her.
Perla, this is for you .
You will always be my bitch.

First Pickup Truck from My Father

First Pickup Truck from My Father
By
Alberto Ortega Servin

When I was children as my father bought Pickup Truck, I was remembering it was cost about $10,000.00 Mexican Pesos. This Pickup Truck sold for my uncle. His bought this pickup in the United States America during many times him came to Unites States, so my father too. Also In this time a few people had a van and truck, because it was very expensive in Mexico.
I can to count with my fingers the people who had car or truck. Only tree people had the Truck in my smaller Town (El Tecuan) with my father.
The farmer very poor then that the money was enough for it, so they bough their harvest in December or they was harvest from wheat in May, so they sold it, different companies in La Piedad, Michoacán, Mexico. But the companies bought the sorghum, corn and wheat it paid very cheaper. It was enough for buy the tuck.
Now farmers have come to the Unites States of America, also they have brought to different kind pickup truck and van but come farmers was not buying cars because government don’t want to legalization it.
The farmer bought of the pickup truck in the United States because pickup truck is cheaper for the farmer in the United State, it is cheaper to buying it but in Mexico the pickup truck is very expensive so the farmers haven’t enough money to buying it.
Now my father has lived in Oakland, California, also he does not car or pickup truck, but he does not drive car. I do not know, why? Maybe he is not driving the car because I think so he had accident before. Finally my father sold this pickup truck as old iron.

I Learned to Read as Until 8 Year Old, Why?

I Didn’t Learn to Read Until I Was 8 Years Old, Why?

by

Alberto Ortega Servin

I didn’t learn to read until I was 8 years old. Why? I have several different reasons.

EL Tecuan Ranch, where I lived, was far away from cities. At that time, the roads were made from gravel and sand. We had a small school, but often we had no teachers. No teachers lived in our town.

The teachers took a bus to our town. They often arrived late to teach my class. And the teachers didn’t teach for very long. Also, the teachers went out on strike for long periods of time. They protested in Morelia, the capitol of Michoacán.

Also, the teachers were very lazy. They only came to our school a few days a week. Sometimes they came three days a week. Sometimes they never came.

The teachers were fanatics.

Now, in 2007, the teachers belong to a movement in Mexico City. They say that the government has stolen their money and violated their rights. They protest about ISSSTE laws.

They really don’t have any reason to protest because the new laws are intended to shelter their retirement.

Please write a last paragraph that connects (and summarizes) to the title of the story.

A Little Feeling About the United States

Hi, everyone. My name is Tina.

I can't say much about this country because I just came to the United States around three weeks ago. But I feel deeply in my heart that this country is my second motherland. I think the United States will make me become better.

My husband's father gave me some advice. He said that I should study at the university. He thinks I should go to the university before I look for a good job.

I am confuse, because I don't know which university would be good for me.

In the United States everyone can attend a university, even if they don't have a lot of money. That is a great thing to me. I will be able to study without worrying about money.

Not all countries are like that. I still worry about my future.

I am going to choose the "Travel Industry" major at Laney College.

Deaf and Mute

I want to tell about a movie. This is my favorite movie. This movie was made ten years ago and I still keep it in my mind. The movie tells about a deaf and mute woman.

Her parents were best friends with another couple. They agreed that if one couple had a boy baby and the other couple had a girl baby, the children would get married when they grew up.

Both couples did have babies. The girl baby had a problem. she couldn't hear and she couldn't speak either. Ater twenty years, when they had grown up, and it was time to get married, the boy didn't want to marry the deaf mute girl. His parents wanted him to marry her.

In those days, the didn't ever see the girl before they were married.

They did get married. On the wedding night he saw his new wife for the first time. She was very beautiful. He fell in love with her.

The young husband and wife lived with the husband's brother and sister. They didn't like the deaf mute bride. She always treated her in-laws nice, but they treated her very badly. When she was cooking they put a lot of salt in the vegetables. They hoped that the boys parents would be angry with her, but the parents still liked the young bride.

After one year, the young bride gave birth to a baby girl. Her husband and his parents were very happy. When the baby was ten months old her father called the baby's name, but the baby did not turn her head. The father took her to see a doctor at the hospital.

The doctor said, "The baby is like her mother. She can not talk and she can not hear."

The young husband's parents were very angry about that. The husband left his wife and baby and went to another country. The young mother's sister in law and brother in law treated the baby and her mother very badly.

Every day tears flowed down the young mother's face.

Meanwhile, her husband met another woman and married her. They had two children, both boys, together.

The deaf mute bride did not know that he had remarried. Every day she wrote him a letter. He never received the letters because his new wife hid them from him.

The deaf mute woman's father-in-law was very rich. His children wanted him to divide his money among among them.

Later, the old father-in-law became very sick. The deaf mute took care of him every day. One day she needed to buy medicine for the old man, but she didn't have any money. She asked her brother-in-law and sister-in-law for money for their father's medicine. They didn't give her any money.

The deaf mute woman sold her own clothes and jewelry to buy medicine for her father-in-law. After a while, her father-in-laws health improved. He found out that the deaf mute woman had helped when his own children refused to help him.

When the old man died, he left most of his money to his deaf mute daughter-in-law.

Five years later, the deaf mute woman's husband received a letter from her. He asked his new wife to give him the letter's she had hidden. He became angry at her when he read the letters.

By then, his sons were five years old. The deaf mute woman's husband left his new wife and their sons and returned home to see his first wife. Unfortunately, the deaf mute woman became sick and died before he arrived.

He saw his daughter and cried.

The end.

Nothing Left to Do But Cry (Non ci resta che piangere)

Yesterday, in the afternoon class, since it was Columbus Day, we talked about how the discovery of America by Cristoforo Colombo is related to many others issues, like the extermination of native Americans.

Actually, I think we don’t have many things to celebrate on this day because after the Europeans came ashore in America they started many years of genocide and exploitation. They not only exploited the indigenous people of the Americas, but they also exploited people from Africa, through the slave trade. We are still paying the consequences of this exploitation.

On days like Columbus Day I’m not very proud to be Italian…Although I want to recommend an Italian movie to you. “Nothing Left to do but Cry” covers this topic, but ironically. It’s a very funny comedy starring Roberto Benigni (the director of “La vita e’ bella”) and Massimo Troisi, the actor in “Il Postino.”

The movie is about two friends that get lost in countryside of Tuscany. They travel back in time to 1492. The character played by Benigni has a sister. The sister broke up with her American boyfriend. Benigni tries to convince his friend that they have to stop Columbus’ departure explaining to his friend about how much pain this trip has caused. He tells his friend if they stop Columbus they will be heroes. This will be a deed that can change the world, but actually, he is only moved by a personal purpose – he wants to save his sister from the pains of love.

They start with a trip through Europe. They meet many historical characters and are involved in many absurd situations. Will they finally be successful in stopping Columbus?

Only a Thought

Hello class.

This post is my thought for tonight, but do not pay me much attention. We are changeable people. Today we may believe in something, but tomorrow we won’t. It is one of the good parts of being a human being....... I hope

I am happy to be here, to be learning another language, to be living in a different culture. Sometimes life away from home can be hard, especially when you can not see your family, your friends, and the people who support you.

I think many people are in the same situation as me. I am not just talking about people who came from other countries. We need to be sure that this is really what we want, if this is the best option. We have to try to find in ourselves what really makes us happy.

I think that is the reason to be here in this world. We do not have to do big things in life, or try to be somebody who we are not. We only have to find a balance between who we are and what we do. That is all. A good scientist does not have to spend twenty hours every day looking into a microscope trying to find a cure to some virus.

It was very interesting to read what Dr. Palmer wrote about "becoming the person you have always been". He talked about how people can find their true nature by remembering their childhood. We have to know our limits and potential.

But also, I think it is not just what we can do on the job. We need to know what to do with our lives. Maybe some people just want to have a family, and that is ok. Maybe some people just want to live in the mountains, to sleep in a truck and that is respectable also. Everything we do affects the people that we love and the people who surround us.

Only be happy. Don’t make other people unhappy. , and this, That is the hard part of happiness. All the things have his price?

My Thursday Evenings

My Thursday Evenings

by Alice

Every week, on Thursday evening, my American sister and I have dinner together with her teenage cousins. The cousins’ parents aren't at home and my sister and I cook for them and stay with them until their parents come home. Yesterday evening, I cooked pasta and the cousins made a good salad and banana bread for dessert. I had never tasted banana bread before.

The cousins are very curious about me and life in Italy and they question me about many things. I do the same with them and they help me a lot with English because when I am with them I feel comfortable and I talk without the fear of making mistakes. They are very nice and smart even if they are much younger than me. We can talk about almost everything. They have many interests like dancing, playing sax, reading and they are very open-minded.

Yesterday, we talked about the feeling of awkwardness. It was intense because we were talking about an intimate feeling and also funny because they made strange gestures to explain to me the meaning of this word. They tried to explain this feeling by making a sort of turtle with their hands but neither my sister ( She is American and is a native English speaker) nor I could easily understand them!

I like this "new tradition" of spending Thursday evenings with them. We eat good food, we compare cultural habits, we learn new things about each others and we laugh a lot. I think that sitting around a table together is a good way to relate with people and to share feelings. Maybe this thought is very Italian...

Another Song

You're Beautiful
by James Blunt

My life is brilliant.

My life is brilliant.
My love is pure.
I saw an angel.
Of that I'm sure.
She smiled at me on the subway.
She was with another man.
But I won't lose no sleep on that,
'Cause I've got a plan.

You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you.

Yeah, she caught my eye,
As we walked on by.
She could see from my face that I was,
Flying high, [ - video/radio edited version]
Fucking high, [ - CD version]
And I don't think that I'll see her again,
But we shared a moment that will last till the end.

You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
You're beautiful, it's true.
I saw your face in a crowded place,
And I don't know what to do,
'Cause I'll never be with you.

You're beautiful. You're beautiful.
You're beautiful, it's true.
There must be an angel with a smile on her face,
When she thought up that I should be with you.
But it's time to face the truth,
I will never be with you.
