The First Day Of School

The First Day Of School

The first day of school, after the professor introduced himself, he asked his students to find a person who could become a friend. When I stood up looking around, someone hit my shoulder lightly. I moved my head to see an old and short woman whose face was filled with wrinkles. She smiled to me. She said, “Hi! My name is Rose. I am eighty-seven years old. Could I hug you for a moment? ” I replied earnestly with a smile, “Of course.” Then she really hugged me closely.

I made a joke and asked her, “Your age is such small, why do you want to study at the college?” She said, “I am preparing to find a husband. We will raise several children, and then wander to retire and travel around the whole world.”

“Are you serious?” I asked purposely.” I was very curious because her age was old and she was going to college. She said, “I always hoped to receive a college education. Now finally I have reached for the long-cherished wish.”

After we finished school each day, we always took a walk to the Student Unite Building. We shared a chocolate milk shake. From that time, we became good friends with each other. During three months, we always left our classroom together every day. She looked like one “Time Machine”- sharing her experience and wisdom. I always felt with gusto when she talked.

By the time the school year ended; Rose had become a famous person at our school. No matter where she went, she could make new friends easily. She dressed up frequently and attractively. She was delighted that schoolmates paid attention to her.

At the conclusion of the term, Rose was invited to give a lecture for the football team at an evening banquet. After the director introduced her to the audience, she walked to the platform with small steps. At the beginning of her talk, Rose’s speaking notes fell down. She appeared a little annoyed and embarrassed for a few seconds. Then, she said softly into the microphone, “I was very nervous about giving this speech. I planned to drink a cup of beer to be make my gall-bladder strong. Actually, I drank a cup of whisky. No thought that the gadget almost takes my life. Look like; I can’t remember that had make the preparation. So, I speak the most familiar matters.

Everybody laughed. She cleared her throat, then started to say: “Just because we are very old we should not stop having fun. Because, if we stop having fun, then we will become too old. Joyful success is you must smile frequently. Be humorous and charming. You must embrace the dream. When you lose the dream, you are not alive.”

Many people around us look nice, but they haven’t learned anything. They have never grown up. They are actually unconscious. There is a difference between being old and growing up. Anybody can age but not everyone grows up. ‘Growing up” means that you need to embrace change and use it to change yourself. Don’t complain and regret to live! Old people usually don’t regret what they have done, but they are regretful for something that wanted to do, but didn’t do when they were young. Only a person’s heart that is filled with regret can scare us to death.”

That year ended. Rose finally completed her college studies. A week after graduation, she died peacefully while sleeping. We gathered and sent our respect to the woman who had taught us “No matter how old you are, you must decide to make your dreams come true!”
